The goal of the Ontario Women's Justice Network (OWJN) is to promote an understanding of the law with respect to the issue of violence against women and children. We provide accessible legal information to women and their supporters in a manner that reflects the experiences and realities of women. We review and analyze written law (legislation) and case law (court decisions).

The material on this website reflects a feminist perspective and we make no apologies for challenging the barriers and oppressions that women face within society. We are committed to being inclusive of all individuals who are marginalized and to respond to the issues they may face.

This site will use the term "violence" in the broadest sense. We acknowledge all barriers women face from personal violence (physical, sexual, emotional etc.) to the social and systemic barriers (like poverty).

OWJN is a project of the Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children (METRAC), originally funded by the Trillium Foundation of Ontario. METRAC is a Toronto- based organization working in the areas of justice for women and children, violence prevention, personal safety, and public education on all issues of violence against women and children.

Legal Aid is available to low income individuals and disadvantaged communities for a variety of legal problems, including criminal matters, family disputes, immigration and refugee hearings and poverty law issues such as landlord/tenant disputes, disability support and family benefits payments.

Legal aid offers different kinds of services, depending on the client's needs. Legal aid is available through the certificate program, which entitles clients to receive advice and representation by private lawyers or by legal aid staff lawyers. To apply for a legal aid certificate, you must attend in person at a local legal aid office If you are eligible for legal aid, you can get a legal aid certificate that you can take to the lawyer of your choice. Legal assistance is also available through the community legal clinic program.

Every Ontario resident who needs legal assistance can apply. Eligibility for legal aid certificates is based on financial need and the type of case. The applicant may pay nothing or a portion of the cost of legal aid, depending on their financial situation.
